Holistic Approaches to Pain Management: Beyond Just Medication

Close your eyes and think of the moment when your pinky toe gets hit by a corner or sofa. My apologies for the discomfort, but that pain makes you sing "pain-pain, go away" instead of "rain-rain, go away". For me, it takes around 10-12 teardrops rolling down before the pain vanishes.

 

Jokes aside, people faces pain for various reasons, like kidney stones or muscle strain. These types of pains are worse, and even painkillers takes a lot of time to give relief. Furthermore, internal pains are also not ignorable. Internal pains like heartbreak worsens everything in a person’s life.

 

So, is there any way beyond painkillers that someone can get relief from pain? Yes, there are multiple ways to deal with pain other than medication, and these methods sometimes work better than medicines. So, let's explore the ways to see off pain faster.

1.   Applying Heat or Cold

One way to get relief from pain is to apply heat or cold over the area. But there are some circumstances for it to be used this way accordingly. Firstly, both of them should not be done if there is a wound and the pain is also due to the wound. Now, when should you use heat, and when should you use cold? If you have it and there is swelling coming up, then use an ice bag to decrease the swelling. However, if you are having chronic muscular or joint pain, then you can use a heat bag to get relief.

2.   Massage

For constant muscular pain that occurs without any injury, you can use a technique called massage. It is done by rubbing oil over the area where you are experiencing pain. The oil is rubbed very gently to relax the muscles of the affected area. But there are some considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, if the pain is in the joints, don't massage and consider seeing a doctor. Also, don't keep using this technique for a long time; otherwise, your muscles may get addicted to it and make you feel discomfort.

3.   Physical Therapy

In many cases, there are some activities in which you can get relief from the pain. These activities include stretching and walking. By stretching, the tense muscles can be relaxed, and the same is the case with walking. Walking can also help you relax from kidney stone pain, which is considered very severe.

4.   Yoga and meditation

Not thinking about the pain is also an effective way to get rid of pain. To achieve this, you can meditate or practise yoga. While meditation is about relaxing your mind, yoga takes it a step further. It also includes many poses so you can make your body flexible and stronger.

These are some of the ways that you can use to get rid of pain. However, even if you get relief from pain, seeing a doctor is a must. The reason is that many times, the pain occurs due to any other problem that can only be diagnosed by a doctor.

 

For instance, a kidney stone results in unbearable pain, but people often neglect it and just take a painkiller. Simply put, you can get relief from pain in the above-mentioned ways, but knowing the reason is also important.
